What I liked about Metamorphosis is the surreal plot underlying extremely realistic settings and messages. Obviously, the fact that Gregor turned into a cockroach and that he took no surprise to that etc — all that doesn’t make sense in reality. The points in which they feel emotions are different. Maybe that’s why I wasn’t really able to relate to the story and actually go through the same emotions and thinking processes as the characters in the book. To be fair, I didn’t know what to feel. And to be brutally honest, turning to a cockroach and this whole thing seemed like a story I would hear from… an imaginative toddler😭. I didn’t know how to respond. But what I did know was that this was so realistic that it hurts. The family that fully relies on their hard-working son at that time because he had to take that “male authority figure” after his father’s retirement, and how they never really appreciated his effort compared to how much he tried to meet their needs and wants. When his appearance changed and their roles suddenly changed in a short span of time, he was to be hidden. At last, when he was nothing more than a burden to his family, he was left to die, which elicited a rejoiced response from the family..! How ironic it is that once the source of… the means to enjoy one’s life is cut off, they finally reflect on the previous effort sacrificed by someone, and how even more ironic it is if they never learn how to appreciate, regret, and work their way to repay it? I could definitely see this from a cultural perspective as well because even till my parents’ generations, the sons were expected to carry out family traditions and to be the one earning the money. To be responsible for the family’s livelihood and to be the “object” to depend upon.
